Student Use

We recognise that mobile phones are part of a teenager’s everyday life and that they also play an important role in helping students to feel safe and secure. Other mobile devices (such as Apple Watch or FitBit) will be tolerated, but if they interfere with the teaching and learning or are used inappropriately, they will be removed in accordance with the misuse of mobile phones; such devices must be removed for tests and examinations. We are happy therefore to allow students to bring their mobile devices to school provided that they follow a few simple guidelines.

  • Mobile phones are only used for emergency contact only on the way to/from school and during break/lunchtime
  • Mobile phones must be switched off during the school day
  • Mobile phones and other mobile devices must not be taken into tests and examinations
  • Mobile phones and devices may be used in lessons with the teacher’s permission as a tool to aid learning
  • Mobile phones and devices must not be used to take photos/videos of other students and/or staff without their expressed permission
  • The use of mobile phones whilst moving between lessons is not allowed
  • The school does not take responsibility for loss of or damage to mobile devices.
  • Mobile phones and devices handed in as lost property will be kept in the school office until the end of term and will then be disposed of if not reclaimed by a student
  • If it is necessary to use a mobile phone (before/after school and/or during break/ lunch time) in the case of emergency, this should be done outside the school premises. Any telephone call made inside the building must be for an emergency and with a member of staff’s permission.

* “using” should be interpreted as talking or texting. If a phone has not been switched off and rings in a lesson, a warning should be given but the phone should not be confiscated.

If a student is caught using her/his own, or a “borrowed” mobile phone or device during the school day, outside of the above guidelines, the phone (including sim card) will be confiscated and taken to reception from where it can be collected at the end of the day. Parents will be notified by letter.

The second time a student is caught, the phone/device will be confiscated during the school day for the rest of that week (or the following week if the device is confiscated on a Friday). Students will be expected to hand it in 9am and collect it at 6pm. Parents will be notified by letter.

The third time a student is caught, the phone/device will be confiscated and taken to reception for the rest of that term (or the following term if the device is confiscated in the last week of term). The name of the student using the phone/device will be added to a list kept with the confiscated items. Parents will be contacted by letter.

The school reserves the right to refuse to allow persistent offenders to bring a mobile phone/device to school.

This policy is explained to all students at the beginning of each academic year and a copy of this policy is available on the school website.

Confiscated devices must be put in an envelope with the student’s name and the confiscation date clearly displayed. The name of the student using the device will be added to a list kept with the confiscated devices. Phone/Mobile Device letter No 1 and No 2 will automatically be sent to the parents.

Staff Use

Mobile phones should be switched off and they should not be used to make or take personal calls during the school working day. Teaching staff should not leave the classroom during lessons to use their mobile phones. Mobile phones may be used during morning/lunch break.

Mobile phones and devices may be used in the classroom as a teaching aid as part of a planned lesson.

Staff may use the school phones if they wish. All personal telephone calls should be recorded on the sheet next to each telephone.
