In Memory of Mr Barrie M. Clarke
It is with great sadness that The Old School announces the passing of our much-loved friend, colleague and teacher, Mr Barrie M. Clarke.
Barrie was a key figure in the life of The Old School from almost the very beginning, joining us in 2010 as our Mathematics and Science teacher. He quickly became known for his passion for learning, his warmth, and his belief that education should be experienced rather than simply taught.
When we first met Barrie, he famously said that he didn't need a classroom—"just a field." That simple statement perfectly captured his philosophy of science in action. He inspired curiosity, encouraged practical learning and showed generations of students that education could be exciting, memorable and fun.
Together with his wife, Dorothy, Barrie became renowned for the wonderful Christmas dinners they organised each year. Students and staff worked together as a team to prepare and celebrate the festive season, creating traditions and memories that will never be forgotten. More recently, Barrie continued to champion teamwork by hosting the school's beginning-of-term residential activities at his campsite, where staff and students developed confidence, resilience and lasting friendships through shared experiences.
Barrie will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him, had the privilege of being taught by him, or worked alongside him as a valued colleague and friend.
On a personal note, we will always remember Barrie's wisdom, kindness and exceptional understanding of pastoral care. During difficult times, his calm advice, thoughtful perspective and unwavering support were invaluable, and we shall always be grateful for his friendship.
A proud Yorkshireman, Barrie never forgot his roots. He often spoke with pride of being the first member of his family to attend university, determined, as he would say with characteristic humour, "to avoid the pit." His life reflected the values of hard work, education, humility and service to others.
Barrie touched the lives of so many people, and his legacy will continue through the countless students, colleagues and friends he inspired over the years.

Everyone at The Old School extends our heartfelt condolences to Barrie's loving wife Dorothy, his family and to his many friends. Barrie will always remain a cherished part of our school's history and will never be forgotten.

I met Barrie last year when I joined the Old School and, like everyone there, he immediately made me feel part of the “family”. I was fortunate enough to teach some of my classes in rooms next to his, and there was invariably a sense of fun and laughter coming from nearby, along with Barrie’s wonderfully dry northern wit, delivered in his own quiet, understated way.
How fortunate so many students were to have a teacher who could make them laugh and genuinely enjoy their maths lessons. Barrie was clearly held in the highest esteem by students and colleagues alike, and he will be very sorely missed.
I send my heartfelt condolences to Barrie’s family, friends and everyone at the Old School.
Barrie was a brilliant colleague to have; I really admired how much be brought to his teaching and to the school as a whole. He always had time for the students and this was seen in all those years when he coordinated Christmas Dinners at the school - a wonderful opportunity to build skills with cooking and collaboration while building community in the process (always supported in these by his lady Dorothy). I loved the way he kept trying to retire and will miss him popping into my classes. Enjoyed and am grateful for the time we spent together.
Barrie you were an inspiration to so many. You made a huge impact on the lives of others, without judgement or prejudice. Barrie, when asked..."What do you teach?" He would reply.. Kids. That was not true, he taught many people, many things. All generation's, but above all kindness. He hated the word, 'stupid.' Because In the tradition of a true educator, to disempower is a derigation of duty. For Barrie Cooking, maths, science, lifetime adventures all had their place in learning. A wise and kind soul. I will miss you. And, always remember the wisdom you brought to complex issues.
Barrie was one of a kind. An outstanding teacher he would always go the extra mile with students and colleagues, he cared deeply about his work and helping others. He had a great sense of humour and made epic speeches that had everyone in fits of giggles and quite often tears - he had a real knack for taking you on an emotional journey in his narrative. He was fun, a bit irreverent but so so kind. You will be missed by so many Barrie xxx

05-08-2026, 06:55Barrie was just simply one of the warmest and kindest people I have known. He made me feel so welcome when I began work at the Old School. I quickly understood his approach to education mirrored his personality. Students were at the centre of everything he did and he encouraged others to do the same. His interventions at staff meetings were so thoughtful. His no nonsense northern attitude and his wonderful wit cut through circular arguments with ease. He understood so much about life, so many skills - including his beautiful resin creations. What a wonderful man. He will be missed by so many.
