Music at the Old School

The Old School has a thriving music and performing arts department, headed by experienced performer and music educator Paola Bottomley.

The school regularly holds performances showcasing talent in the local community and encourages all students to participate in performance related activities.

Paola has a broad base of experience and works in a variety of situations as a performer and educator. Her initial training was at Trinity and Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance in London, where she graduated with First Class Hons, specializing in Voice and Jazz Music.  In 2007 Paola was awarded a Yamaha Jazz Award for outstanding young Jazz musicians. She has since gone on to receive several awards including a prize for best improvisation and gained 2nd place in Lithuania at the International Jazz Vocalist Competition held in Klaipeda.  She has been described as a ‘truly gifted improviser’ (Pete Churchill). She then went on to complete her Masters Degree winning the Elton John Scholarship Award at The Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating with Distinction.

A little bit about Paola...
Paola is an experienced teacher and vocal coach, currently working with a number of institutions in France and the UK. Recently she recorded a set of educational videos for the Trinity Rock and Pop Grade syllabus. She currently holds the position of Professor for Jazz and Pop voice at the Conservatoire of Bordeaux, Paola is a senior lecturer in Vocal Techniques at Bordeaux Montaigne University, Certified Master Teacher of ESTILL and is also Head of Music and Performing Arts at The Old School. She is also the vocal coach for the Dordogne Jazz International Summer School, where she teaches alongside many respected UK Jazz tutors.

Victoria is a highly experienced musician and educator, specialising in Flute and Piano. A flautist with over 25 years of playing experience, Victoria offers private flute and piano lessons to children and adults, either from her music studio in Monbahus or in your own home.

A flute can be provided on loan, if required. Whether you wish to sit exams to track your progress (ABRSM and other grades are available) or simply play for pure enjoyment, Victoria’s teaching style reflects her desire to make music accessible and fun for all.

Performing Arts for Kids

Weds 4.30 – 6pm (age 6 - 13)

Paola co–runs this weekly class with experienced actor Royston Seedwell, teaching improvisation, singing, acting and confidence in performance.


Paola teaches a weekly music class at The Old School where the students study music theory, notation and performance skills. Exam boards taught include Edexcel, ABRSM and Rockschool grades.

This facility is particularly useful for supporting our students through the GCSE and A level Music Performance components of the examination process.

Our students enjoy the benefits of recording their songs, instrumentals, group creations, celebrating their talent with professional support from leading sound engineer Emmanuel Feramus.
